Australia have won back-to-back Palma World Long Range Rifle Championships in a closely fought contest held in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
In the closest matches in the competitions history, Australia (7172.996) came out on top at the final range on the final day, beating England (7168.1005) by 4 points, to South Africa (7153.869) who were in third.
The win is the second time in a row that Australia have won, after victory in 2019 in Trentham, New Zealand.
The championship has been running since 1876 and competitors shoot over 2 days at distances of 800, 900 and 1000 yards, or 700, 800 and 900 meters, depending on the range configuration.
Try Shootings founder, Matt Shepherd, was a member of the winning Australian team for a second time.
“It was a very intense and was the closest competition in Palma history. The standards and level of shooting excelled both in within our Australian team as well as all other international teams. We are very fortunate to have a very experienced Australian team with excellent coaches and support. It was a great achievement to get over the line with the final range, on the final day”.
A number of members of the Australian team are involved with Try Shooting and happy to help share their time and skills to encourage new members to take up the sport. Matt hopes that it will provide a pathway for the next generation of Australian shooters, “There is nothing better than winning gold for your country in a sport that you love. I hope that we’ll have some future Australian representatives start out their journey in the sport via Try Shooting.”
